WOOLTON, ALLERTON & GATEACRE AREA. LIVERPOOL.

This was my home until Feb.1955 when I emigrated to Canada. After my father died new owners installed new windows and the stone garden wall and gate. Prior to that it was similar to the house to the right.

This was taken from the back of 162 Vale Rd. in 1946, with my first camera, a folding Icarette with roll film, developed and printed in the bathroom. We watched one night early in WWII when the fields of Allerton Golf Course, in the distance on the other side of Menlove Avenue, were one night covered with burning incendiaries. The gardens were still showing the effects of having been used to grow vegetables during the war, in addition to the allotment gardens behind our homes.

ALLERTON HALL 2005.
This was rebuilt after lying almost derelict after a fire, A brewery was allowed to refurbish it and open it as a pub / restaurant titled THE PUB IN THE PARK.

Became a public park.
Winston Churchill was once a guest here when it was a private estate.

ALLERTON TOWER ORANGERY.
The entry from the original house is just visible on the left.

THE ORANGERY OF ALLERTON TOWER.
The original home, which I remember playing around as a child, was at the far end and to the left of this only part remaining. Unfortunately it was destroyed by fire.

ALLERTON TOWER ENTRANCE LODGE.
Designed by Elmes in 1847.

THE MILL STILE WOOLTON.
This is a public footpath between two sections of Woolton sandstone quarry, atop a column of rock with a sheer drop of more than 100 ft. each side. As a child going to school I would climb up the inside of the wall to look over. At the far end there used to be a Windmill. The quarry is now full of nice homes.

HOMES IN WOOLTON QUARRY.
In the 1940's you had to descend down into the quarry from where this photo was taken. On the right is the old Mill Stile pillar of rock, not as high as it used to be, due to the amount of backfill. In 1940 I used to go to target practice with the Air Cadets in the quarry in case the Germans invaded England.

This view is now obscured by the growth of the trees along Menlove Avenue.

Taken a few years later. The Bear Brand Silk Stocking factory on the right, Howard Fords, was closed down, and later demolished. It is now the site of a Tesco store. This photo was taken from where the incendiary bombs fell. It is my understanding the factory made parachutes during the war.

CALDERSTONES PARK BOATING LAKE.
I used to row around this lake quite often. It was equipped with good rental wooden boats by the hour, and my father would often be in charge of them. Wasn't I lucky. Unfortunately the boats were one night destroyed by the vandals of that time. A source of good exercise and enjoyment lost for future young people.

ST. PETER"S SENIOR BOYS SCHOOL.
Boys moved up to this school at age 10, leaving at age 14. Behind the school is the church hall where the Beatles played as the Quarrymen in the 1960's. See next photo. I attended this school from 1936 to 1940. Teachers were Ms.Porter, Mr.Sinclair, Mr Facey, and Mr.Jones, the Headmaster.

ST.PETERS CHURCH HALL.
This is where the Beatles performed as THE QUARRYMEN prior to them becoming World famous.

ST.PETER'S CHURCH.
In my last year of school I remember being chosen along with about six other boys to climb up inside the tower to view the surrounding countryside, on Ascention Day. It was necessary to go up past the clock bells between the quarter hour ringing.

THE MECHANICS INSTITUTE.
We walked to this building from our school to learn crafts. The boys leaned woodwork on the bottom floor, and the girls cooking on the upper floor.

WOOLTON SWIMMING POOL & PUBLIC BATHS.
I swam many lengths of the pool, one day I lapped up to fifty. There were baths here for people living in homes without a bath to avail themselves of one for a small charge.
